What is smash factor?

Smash factor is the ratio of ball speed to club speed, expressed as a decimal that reveals how efficiently the club transfers energy to the ball at impact.

Smash factor is calculated by dividing the ball speed by the club speed at the moment of impact. A driver with a club speed of 90 mph producing a ball speed of 135 mph, for example, yields a smash factor of 1.50. This single number tells a fitter whether you are making solid contact with the sweet spot or losing energy through poor strike location or technique.

The ratio matters because the laws of physics set limits on how much energy any club can transfer. Drivers top out around 1.48 to 1.50 smash factor under ideal conditions, while irons range from 1.35 to 1.45 depending on the club. When your smash factor falls short of these thresholds, it signals one of three problems: off-center hits, a swing path that doesn't match the club's design, or equipment that does not suit your swing speed.

If you are generating good club speed but low ball speed, the issue is strike quality or club fit.
