Course management is the strategic decision-making process during play that involves selecting the right club, choosing a target line, and evaluating risk versus reward to score as well as possible on each hole.
Course management refers to the mental and tactical choices a golfer makes while playing each hole. Rather than simply hitting the ball toward the green, course management involves deliberate decisions about club selection, target lines, and how to navigate hazards, slopes, and course layout to achieve the best possible score.
On the course, skilled golfers consider factors like wind direction, lie of the ball, distance to hazards, and their own strengths and weaknesses. A golfer might choose a less aggressive line off the tee to avoid trouble, or select a club that guarantees distance control over maximum distance. These choices reflect understanding of when to take calculated risks and when to play conservatively.
Course management separates high-scoring rounds from low ones because two players hitting the same quality shot can score differently based on where they place the ball and how they set up subsequent shots. Playing lessons often focus on teaching course management so golfers learn to think strategically rather than react shot-to-shot. Instructors help players read greens, commit to targets, manage their temperament, and make decisions based on their game rather than ego.
